But the new bug is called the New Beetle, though you shouldn't be looking for badges to that effect anywhere in the car - because there aren't any. But hey, that is triumph of design for you. When Jay Mays attempted to recreate the iconic exterior form of the original bug, he made sure that the new car retained the fundamental lines. The result is a car that can be identified from space. Even bigger victory is when children who do not know the existence of the original still love the New Bug. Simply put, this is a suitably huggable automobile.

But there are a few things one should know before starting with a road test. Volkswagen has perfected the art of platform sharing and deep under the stunning shell of the bug lies a VW Golf (ditto with other VW Group models like the Skoda Octavia, Audi TT and so on). That means the new car features a front-engine, front-wheel drive lay out instead of the rear-engine, rear-wheel drive lay out of the original. No more 'bonnet' jokes alright?

The New Beetle was launched a decade back and has since spawned a convertible version too. The 'retro' design is so good that it has not received any major update till now - and as long as the car sells on the way it looks, it does not need any.

Clean lines comprised of three adjoining semi-circles pay homage to the original beetle. But the designer has done a major clean-up job by creating a clutter-free, smooth profile that looks oh-so-cute from all angles. Seen in twilight you will wonder whether the car is 'going' or 'coming' though - because the tail lamps are housed on the fender like the headlamps up ahead. Brilliant. I have driven some serious machines on the streets of Mumbai and only exotic supercars got more eyeballs than the New Beetle. People stopped to ask about the price, fuel efficiency or just to tell me that the car looked great. If you want to attract some attention on the road, there are not many better choices in India today.

'Thoroughly modern yet simple' is how one can put the interior design of the New Beetle. Cues to the car that inspired this creation are many - including large dials and, believe this, a flower vase by the side of the steering wheel.

A functional yet good looking three spoke steering wheel allows you to monitor the information laid out in the single large dial that houses the speedo, the rev counter and the fuel gauge among other things. Scores of round dials, switches and air-con vents keep up with the overall 'ovoid' design theme. Extremely good quality materials and a twin-tone treatment cannot be missed. The New Beetle feels very spacious for a boutique car.

Both the front seats 'lift-fold-move forward' easily to provide access to the rear seats. Unlike other (sportier) coupes, the rear seats are meant for humans and not just grocery and pets. What can be slightly annoying to the Indian buyer though is the vast area of plastic before the windscreen meets the bonnet - problem for those who like to see the edge of the car that they are driving. Nothing so serious that you cannot get used to it.

You do not buy a Beetle for burning rubber but hey, you have to live up to the 'Herby goes to Monte Carlo' reputation too, right? Only one engine option is made available for India and that is a 2000 cc, four cylinder unit that develops a relaxed 115 bhp. Not really a stonker of an engine going by today's standards.

The power is sent to front wheels through a six-speed automatic gear box. Despite the paucity of power on paper, the Bug is fun to drive. The steering is direct and power delivery smooth and without any lag. The power train lends a cruiser (than a bruiser) approach to the car - perfect then for a flowing road that borders the ocean! It takes 12 odd seconds to do 100 kph - so she aint no drag queen! That said the engine car manage to hold a steady 150 kph when you are blessed with an express highway.

The New Beetle is as safe as a last generation Golf - which is not a bad thing at all. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and an electronic stability control comes standard along with four airbags (driver, passenger and side airbags).

Awaited May 2009 : Next surprise from Maruti

Maruti Suzuki will add yet another small car to its range this summer and to add to the rising temperatures, the company decided to jet off to sweltering Malaysia to put together its commercial campaign for the new car. Back in India, the company was busy rolling out the first of its K12M engines that will power the new addition to its portfolio. In most countries it is called the Splash, but in India it will feature the Ritz moniker.

Based on the Swift platform, the Ritz is just 3.7 metres long. Designed to replace the Wagon-R in European markets, the Ritz is about 18 centimetres longer. The design of the car is in line with the current range of Suzukis and despite the tall boy approach, it looks less top heavy than the boxy Wagon-R. With the extra length, it has managed to liberate more interior room and this makes it a better environment to be in. Like always, there are bits and pieces of the Swift that can be found on the inside, but the overall quality is better than the Wagon-R.

With near similar underpinnings and the option of a petrol engine to begin with, the Maruti Ritz will take on the likes of the Hyundai i10 Kappa with its new K12M engine. This 1197cc four-cylinder uses a DOHC configuration just like the Kappa, but produces even more power. Rated at 84 bhp@6000 rpm, the power figure is just as impressive as the torque — at 11.4 kgm@4500 rpm. So how come Maruti have managed to pull it off? Well, they’ve adopted an all-aluminium engine with an innovative rocker-less DOHC camshaft, a distributorless ignition system, lighter pistons and nut-less conrods and a new silent timing chain to reduce NVH.

To assemble this marvel of an engine, Maruti Suzuki has localised most of the engine components to keep costs in check. This means when the engines roll out from Maruti’s Gurgaon drivetrain facility, they will be priced competitively enough to ensure the Ritz stays in the hunt of its competition. While the car is also available internationally with the 1.3-litre DDiS engine, we won’t get it for now, until Maruti can satisfy the demands of the Swift and Swift Dzire with its limited production capacity.

While Maruti is tight-lipped about prices just yet, we think it’ll be priced around the i10 Kappa, which puts it in the Rs 4.25 to 5.25 lakh range. Given its slightly larger dimensions and better interior room, it could be a probable winner in the Indian market when it rolls out in May. A sizzling battle for your wallets is in the offering.

First global car turns 100 !

Henry Ford's Model T, which changed the world's automobile industry, is a 100 years old.

American auto giant Ford Motor Company is observing the 100th anniversary of the Ford Model T in a year-long series of celebrations to honour the iconic vehicle.

The Ford Model T made its debut on October 1, 1908. It was the world's first low-priced, mass-produced automobile that was reliable and could be maintained easily. The car, whose production finally stopped on May 26, 1927, sold more than 16.5 million units, making it the 7th best-selling car ever in automobile history.

On December 18, 1999, the Ford Model T was named 'Car of the Century.' Henry Ford called the Model T 'the Universal Car.' It was also called the Tin Lizzie.

The Model T was equipped with a 20-horsepower, side-valve four-cylinder engine and two-speed planetary transmission on a 100-inch wheelbase. The car had a top speed of about 70 km per hour. The car weighed 550 kg. It had a fuel consumption of between 6 and 9 km per litre.

Ford established the Ford Motor Company to manufacture automobiles in 1903, and began to produce a few cars a day at the Ford factory in Detroit. He then set up a massive industrial complex along the Rouge River in Dearborn, Michigan, and then went ahead to revolutionise the way automobiles were produced. Although he did not invent the automobile or the assembly line, Henry Ford was the first person to apply the assembly line technique to produce cars.

He combined the techniques of precision manufacturing, division of labour and an assembly line -- where workers remained in one place, adding one component to each car as it moved past them on the line -- to make cars. Workers received the spare parts through a conveyor belt at specifically timed intervals to keep the process smooth and efficient.

This transformed the way cars were produced. It reduced the time taken to assemble each vehicle and drastically lowered costs. It also made Ford Motor Company the world's largest auto maker.

In 1914 Ford produced 308,162 cars. The company's web site says that this was more than all the 299 other auto manufacturers combined! By the time the last Model T was built in 1927, Ford was manufacturing a car every 24 seconds. The first Model Ts were sold for $825. This was much cheaper than what other cars cost then.

Remarkably, over the years, Ford continued to steadily lower its price, thanks to its manufacturing efficiencies. The Ford Model T was also the world's first truly global car. By 1927, it accounted for almost 57 percent of all the cars manufactured the world over.

Hyundai to hike car prices by up to 2%

Hyundai Motor India, today said it would raise the prices of its products by up to 2 per cent from the first week of June.

"There has been an increase in the input costs and we have been absorbing it for a while. The situation now is such that we have to pass some parts of it to the consumers," Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) Senior Vice-President Marketing and Sales Arvind Saxena said.

He said the company will hike the prices of its various models by up to 2 per cent. The price increase will come into effect from the first week of June, he added. Hyundai currently sells hatchback models Santro, i10, Getz along with sedans Accent, Verna, Sonata Embera in the country. The company's move to hike prices follows rival Maruti Suzuki India, which last week hiked prices across various models between Rs 1,000 and Rs 18,000.

General Motors to enter used cars business

General Motors India (GMI), the fully-owned subsidiary of the world’s largest car maker General Motors, is planning to enter the used car business to keep up its sales momentum. It’s trying to emulate Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor, which are generating huge incremental sales of new cars in exchange of their older models.

GMI vice-president (sales and marketing) Ankush Arora said that they are working on the used car business and planning the format. Plans are on the drawing board and strategies will be rolled out in the next few months. This new initiative comes after GMI posted the highest growth of 71% (66,543 vehicles) in the Indian passenger car industry in FY08.

GMI is expanding its dealership count in tier I and tier II cities and the diversification into the used car business is expected to be a precursor to its planned launch of a small car, which will roll out from its new plant in Maharashtra. It has 120 sales outlets in India with a base of 96 dealers.

According to market sources, GMI will rope in its existing and new dealers and offer services such as evaluation and trading in of the customer’s existing car. GM’s used car outlets will primarily cater to buyers looking for a certified pre-owned car which will also serve as an upgrade.

Used car outlets such as Maruti True Value, Hyundai Exchange, Ford Assured and Honda Terrace have been successful in both extending the brand reliability and generating incremental car sales.

Yamaha Motor India will be launching the YZF-R1 soon

Yamaha Motor India (YMI) will be launching the 1000cc YZF-R1 in India soon. The company will import these ‘super bikes’ making it among first bike makers in the country to import motorbikes over 800cc. Yamaha plans to sell few dozens of YZF R1 initially.

History of R-1

In the 1950’s, when the Japanese economy was booming in the postwar years and the motorcycle was recognized as a very useful, affordable means of transportation, Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. was founded as a motorcycle maker with the high-performance, high-quality and design conscious "YA-1" as its first model. Since then, Yamaha Motor has always pursued quality in the areas of cutting-edge technology, innovation and sportiness.

For example, Yamaha launched a new style of motorcycle with the "DT-1", the world’s first full-fledged off-road sports model, the road sports model "RZ250" which established YAMAHA’s image as premier maker of two strokes, the "RZV500R", a true GP racer replica, as well as the "YZFR1", another model born of Yamaha’s dedication to innovative design and no-compromise engineering overturned all the previous conceptions of what a 1000cc supersport bike could be.

As for the large displacement supersports models of the second half of the '90s, each maker introduced new models reflecting the user trends of the bigger markets of Europe or North America, and the main category was the 750cc models that were geared toward the Superbike race scene. The models of the 1000cc or over developed an increasingly "almighty" character with emphasis on high-speed cruising that requires high power, and also ease of use in around-town riding. Then, while searching for the next-generation flagship model to follow the "FZR1000" and the "YZF1000R Thunder Ace" of that time, Yamaha Motor came up with the idea of developing "the best 1000cc supersports model with cornering performance that can exceed that of a 750cc."

The "YZF-R1" development project was soon launched and staff from the product planning division, body development div., engine development div., test div., and design div. went to Europe. As a result of detailed research from each point of view, the vector of this new supersports development project began to focus on "Excitement" as its key word.

There are many kinds of enjoyment in motorcycle riding, such as the joy of slow easy-going cruising or the intense, exhilarate feeling of powerful acceleration. About these many kinds of enjoyment, the first development project leader, Kunihiko Miwa, explains, "I believe that one of the fundamental joys of a supersport bike lies in the feeling of pleasure when you ride a machine aggressively through the curves on winding roads. The kind of excitement we aimed for with the development of YZF-R1 was the pleasure when you consciously control the machine through the cornering process rather than just letting the machine lead you through the curve in the directions your eyes point it. It is the process of banking into a corner after braking, tracing the ideal line you want through the corner and then the throttle work to accelerate and exit the curve."

In order to realize an easy, stable handling, the first objective that the project staff set was decisive reduction of machine weigh. A prototype was made initially based on Yamaha’s 1000cc model of the time, the YZF1000R Thunder Ace, with everything not required for running eliminated. The result was a machine with weight was reduced to about the same 160kg level as a Superbike racer. With this prototype running tests were repeated to work on the handling and the engine characteristics.

Furthermore, the chassis was newly designed as a rearrangement of the dimensions of the YZR500 factory racer. The wheelbase was set at a short 1395mm, and a combination of an aluminum "Deltabox II" frame and a 582mm long rear arm was adopted. As for the engine, a 1000cc in-line 4-cylinder type was chosen to achieve an ideal balance between torque and power. And, in order to satisfy the conditions required for the chassis, a revolutionary layout was adopted in which the three axles of the drive shaft, main shaft and crankshaft formed a triangle. This produced an engine design that was very compact in front-rear length.

In this way, the first YZF-R1 achieved specs that were unheard-of at the time, with a dry weight of 177kg, max. power output of 150 PS and a powerweight ratio of 1.18. It won a following among supersport fans as soon as it was released around the world in 1998 and was followed by a strengthening of 1000cc supersport bike development by other motorcycle makers. This triggered a rapid activation of the market and also a shift in Superbike races from 750cc to 1000cc.

Car maker Hyundai Motor India on Friday said it plans to roll out its low-cost car at $ 3,500 in India by 2012.

"It will take at least 4 years to develop the car and we think we will be able to introduce this car by 2012 for Indian market," Hyundai Motor India Managing Director and CEO H S Lheem told reporters here on Friday.

However, he said that this car would not be competing against the Tata's Nano car. The low priced car is in the process of evolution stage at its research and development centre in Korea, he said. On being asked about raising prices of the cars due to rising input cost, he said the company was seriously considering to hike the prices, which is expected to be decided during next month. However, he refused to divulge any detail regarding the hike in the prices.

He said the company would introduce several new models during this year in Indian market which includes Santro LPG, Accent LPG and CNG and i20.

On the export front, he said the company expects to export 2.12 lakh units during this year. The company is exporting four models in overseas markets which includes i10, Santro, Getz and Accent and its export is spread in 95 countries.

The company also announced the launch of its fifth regional office here which will cater to Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Chandigarh and Haryana. In this region, the company was expecting to sell 33,000 units this year against 20,300 units sold last year.

Yamaha introduces G5 - electric start

India Yamaha Motor on Tuesday announced the launch of Yamaha G5 106 cc motorcycle with an electric start engine priced at Rs 39,380 (ex-showroom-all India).

"We plan to continue gearing up our existing product line and marketing initiatives...We are paying attention at the customer who always looks for more. The new G5 is equipped with electric start as a convenient feature. With this launch, we are ready to extend our products and services," Yamaha Motor Executive Vice President and Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Takahiro Maeda said in a statement.

The G5 will be available nationally through the company's existing wide network of dealers and Bike Station. The G5 will be offered in 2 colours, including Deep Red Metallic K and Yamaha Black. The bike is priced at Rs 39,380 (ex-showroom-all India).

Maruti launched its Dzire earlier this year which was a success ever since the day it was launched. Now the figures claim that Maruti has again emerged as a leader in the auto market in India. The new sedan version has already been claimed as a hit in the Indian market where the middle class with growing income has eagerness to opt for an entry level sedan for themselves.

According to the sales figures released by the Society of Automobile Manufacturers for the month of April, Dzire and SX4 have clearly emerged as sales leaders in the A3 segment. This segment recorded an all time high record sales increase of 97.1 percent. The A2 segment sales have also been clearly dominated by Alto, WagonR and Swift. This segment also witnessed a growth of 27.3 percent.

Dzires precursor Maruti Swift has already passed the two lakh units sales since its launch in India in 2005. It sold 61,250 units in the first year of its launch. It success compelled the company to launch it diesel variant subsequently. Swift is currently prices at Rs 4.5 lakh in India is still a success story.

Honda’s compact car Jazz launch likely by 2009 end

The much talked-about Jazz, Honda’s compact car, is likely to be launched in India only by the end of 2009. Honda Siel Cars India is planning to produce Jazz in its upcoming plant at Takapura in Rajasthan. Although the engine components and stamping at Takapura plant will begin in September this year, it will take at least one and a half years for the assembly unit to be ready, indicated top officials of the company.

Honda has launched this highly successful premium hatchback in Europe, North America, Latin America and some parts of Asia including Japan, China, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. However, the company has no plans to launch it this year in India. This is mainly because the company wants to ensure high localisation in Jazz in order to market it at a competitive price. “In all our cars, we are looking for a high level of localisation. That is the case with Jazz too. Our objective is 70-80 per cent localisation,” Masahiro Takedagawa, President and CEO of Honda Siel India, told Business Line.

Jazz is pitched against Suzuki Swift and Hyundai Getz. Takedagawa indicated that Honda has greater plans at the global level in the area of sustainable motoring solutions. He said that the company is keenly looking at the market response to Civic Hybrid to introduce ‘cleaner and greener’ cars to India. “Let’s see what the response to Civic Hybrid is. And then we will decide on other varieties. We will go step by step,” he said. Honda has begun limited marketing of its hydrogen fuel cell-run FCX Clarity in US and Japan.

Honda is importing Civic Hybrid as completely built unit (CBU). Therefore, notwithstanding the 10 per cent excise duty cut, Civic Hybrid will attract the import duty of 104 per cent and will be priced around Rs 20 lakh. The gasoline-electric Civic Hybrid will be 60 per cent more fuel efficient than its existing variants which have the best fuel efficiency in its segment, according to Takedagawa. “Civic Hybrid is the first hybrid car that is commercially available in India. We want to spread the message of green cars through this model. All our 80 dealer shops will showcase a model of Civic Hybrid to familiarise people with the car,” he said.

He said that the company has serious plans on the hybrid technology front. “We have worked closely with Automotive Research Association of India to set hybrid regulations in the country,” he said. Honda launched the eighth generation Accord in Mumbai on Wednesday. The company officials said that the latest edition of Honda Accord was launched in India eight months after its global launch.

The story behind the Tata Nano

At Tata's Engineering Research Center, near the bucolic surroundings of the Tata Motors factory in Pune, India, there are two cars on display. One is a complete prototype of the Nano, the $2,500 compact car Tata unveiled in January, which has all the essentials and safety features of India's higher-priced automobiles along with a sticker price that will forever change the economics of low-cost cars. The other is a neat bisection, with the car's innards clearly visible.

"Every day we invite people to come and examine the car and ask: 'How can we make more savings?'" says Tata Motors Chief Executive Ravi Kant.

That quest to build the world's cheapest car hasn't ended. The Nano should be available this fall, but the mission began back in 2003, when Ratan Tata, chairman of Tata Motors and the $50 billion Tata conglomerate, set a challenge to build a "people's car."

Tata gave an engineering team, led by 32-year-old star engineer Girish Wagh, three requirements for the new vehicle: It should be low-cost, adhere to regulatory requirements, and achieve performance targets such as fuel efficiency and acceleration capacity. The design team initially came up with a vehicle which had bars instead of doors and plastic flaps to keep out the monsoon rains. It was closer to a quadricycle than a car, and the first prototype, Wagh admits candidly, "lacked punch."

Even a bigger engine, which boosted the power by nearly 20%, was still dismal. "It was an embarrassment," says Wagh. But the failure was also the catalyst for Tata's decision to build a proper car, not an upgraded scooter on four wheels or anything flimsy or cheap-looking. "We didn't want an apology for a car," says Ravi Kant. "We were conscious of the fact that whether it was a $2,500 car or not, it ought not to have looked like a $2,500 car."

Becoming a part of history

The tale of the creation and design of the Nano is one of innovation and ingenuity, both inside and outside Tata's own organization. First, Ratan Tata called a meeting of his top parts suppliers and, after showing them the early, earnest but flawed prototypes, asked them to help. Companies including Germany's Bosch, which makes the computer that is the heart of car's engine, were skeptical. So were local Indian players. But Tata persisted, pointing out that not only could a company's specific developments for the Nano help to make history but they could also improve their companies' businesses and bottom lines. Soon most of Tata's traditional suppliers were on board.

Rane Group, for instance, makes a rack and pinion steering system. It focused on reducing the weight of the materials used, replacing the steel rod of the steering with a steel tube -- a major cost-reducer. Typically, the product is made of two pieces, but it was redesigned as one to save on machining and assembling costs. According to Harish Lakshman, director of the $317 million company: "The world has seen this sort of integration of two pieces into one, but applied differently -- not for a new car, and not to reduce costs."

GKN Driveline India, a subsidiary of global auto parts leader GKN, made the driveshaft - the component that transfers power from the engine to the wheel. The team spent a year developing 32 experimental variants to create the perfect driveshaft for the Nano. It roped in designers from the company's French and Italian operations and changed the design to make it lighter and easier to manufacture.For the Nano's rear-wheel drive system, GKN designed a smaller diameter of shaft, which made it lighter and saved on material costs. "We thought if we were successful in this, we could dictate terms to the market, and every other car manufacturer would want to work with us," says Rajendra Ojha, chief executive of GKN Driveline India.

Taking the pulse of the project

All the suppliers have similar stories. And although none would disclose specific cost savings, most stuck to Tata's mandate to cut costs. That was, as Kant acknowledges, the biggest hurdle for the company -- "then, now, and in the future," - particularly as the price of raw materials like steel have more than doubled in the past four years, and the company has to follow new, tighter industry regulations.

Kant, who recently led negotiations to acquire luxury auto brand Jaguar Land Rover, has little time to get involved in day-to-day details of Tata's many projects. However, with the Nano, "every cost, every component price, has to be run by me," he says.

Coordinating the vendors with Tata Motors' team was a whole new exercise in logistics. Wagh quickly realized it was necessary to bring everyone on board, "else it leads to last-minute heartache and delays."

Every morning, he would spend an hour or two on the floor of the Pune factory, insisting that everyone involved -- designers, manufacturing teams, vendor development people - be there to accelerate decision-making and problem-solving. "We had to have the pulse of the project and know exactly where the hurdles were," Wagh remembers.

Over time, Wagh's team grew to comprise some 500 engineers, an impractically large group to gather on a daily basis. So instead, a core team of five engineers gathered every day at 3 p.m. to discuss the latest developments. Each engineer represented a different part of the car: engine and transmission, body, vehicle integration, safety and regulation, and industrial design.

Attention to detail pays off

Fitting the parts of the car together required lots of little, head-breaking details, recalls Wagh. The engine, for instance, was designed three times. Initially, Wagh thought they'd buy an off-the-shelf engine and so studied all the small-capacity engines available. They were unsuitable, so in early 2005 he decided to build his own.

The first was a 540 CC engine that, when fitted on the prototype, lacked the necessary power. So its capacity was increased by 9%, then by another 9%, before Wagh finally settled on a 623 CC engine. Then the foot pedal had to be realigned to create more legroom.

The body had to be changed because Ratan Tata, over six feet tall himself, wanted it to be easy for tall people to get in and out of the car. "Imagine the plight of the body designer - he went through hundreds of iterations, then at the last minute the car length was increased by 100 millimeters!" Wagh says.

The attention to detail paid off: When the car rolled onto the dais at the Auto Show in New Delhi in January, and Ratan Tata stepped out of the driver's seat with ease, it made an immediate impact.

What shook the automobile world most was the fact that the designers seem to have done the impossible: The sleek, sophisticated Nano doesn't look flimsy or inexpensive. If it had been an upgraded scooter on four wheels, Tata still would have been applauded for making a family of four safer on Indian roads. The Nano, however, affords both safety and status.

"The innovation wasn't in technology," Kant recalls. "It was in a mindset change." The Nano, he adds, has put an end to all discussions of having variants of scooters or quadricycles as passenger vehicles on India's roads.

Organizational innovation

Still, the story of the Nano is not confined to its impact on the auto industry. It's a tale that illuminates the India of today - an eager, ambitious nation with a combination of engineering talent, a desire for low costs and value, and the hunger of young managers looking to break from a hidebound corporate environment.

Indeed, the team that worked on the Nano - on average aged between 25 and 30 - has helped to flatten Tata Motors' stodgy, multilayered management structure, which has resulted in an unexpected side-benefit Wagh calls "organizational innovation".

The factory in Singur, Bengal, is still being built, and machinery is being installed. Wagh now spends most of his time away from his Pune home, supervising the work at Singur leading up to the launch date in fall.

Tata Motors is determined to succeed in its mission, Ravi Kant says. "We are hungry for growth - and innovation is a by-product of that."

Interview with Mr. Masahiro Takedagawa, President & CEO, Honda India

Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI) President and CEO Masahiro Takedagawa, in an interview with Swaraj Baggonkar, shares the company's India strategy, including the launch of hybrid technology (a first on Indian roads), small cars and outlook on diesel technology, an area where the company is losing ground to other auto majors. Honda lacks a diesel car in India, a market where more than 40 per cent of vehicles sold run on the fuel. Comment.

We are aware of the wide usage of diesel vehicles in India and the option is open. We are studying the diesel 2.4-litre 100 bhp engine and also the 3.5-litre V6 diesel in some of the overseas markets. These engines can only be used in larger cars. It will be still some time before we introduce diesel cars here.

You will be introducing a hybrid car, a first by any manufacturer in India, in the next couple of months. Do you really see a market for such an expensive vehicle?

Due to high import duties, the Civic Hybrid will be priced around Rs 25 lakh. We have not carried out any evaluation so far, which will determine who our buyers will be. However, we are optimistic about its demand from India. The car will be available at all the 80 dealers across the country.

How many small cars will you bring to India in the next few years?

At present, we are working on two new platforms which will be launched subsequently. The choice will be made between the new Jazz platform or a completely new platform to be launched in 2009. The other platform, which will be built to suit Indian needs, will be launched after four to five years.

How does India stack up against other emerging markets around the world?

We are not driven by sales numbers and are more interested in satisfying customer needs. We are the most profitable foreign company in India. We have been in India for a long time and, though just 65,000 units were sold last year out of the 4 million sold worldwide, it is still one of the fastest growing markets for us.

What steps did the company undertake to raise component sourcing from India?

We source our components from about 100 suppliers in India. We are looking to gain from the free trade agreement (FTA) between India and other Asean countries. We can integrate our sourcing from the Asian countries through the FTA.

Skoda plans small car for India

Czech auto giant Skoda is stepping on the accelerator and plans five new launches in India, including its global small car that will debut next year. These introductions will see Skoda entering into new segments like multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and the sports utility vehicle (SUV).

Speaking to TOI, Thomas Kuehl, member of the board Skoda Auto India said, “We will launch a compact car in the Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh segment, below our existing small car offering, Fabia. India will be the first global market where the car will be launched.” The new global small car is being built on a completely new platform at the company's headquarters in the Czech Republic. The automobile growth story has prompted many global car manufacturers to make India their launch pad before entering markets like the US and Europe.

The Zen Estilo, Swift, SX4, and Dzire from the Maruti Suzuki stable and Hyundai's i10 have all had their debut in India. Maruti Suzuki's concept A-Star, that will be rolled out by year-end, will also make India debut. Skoda will first bring in MPV offering Roomster, which will be launched by the year-end. “Next year, we will launch the new Laura, Octavia and mostly likely the Fabia Combi. In 2010, we plan to launch an SUV as well,” said Kuehl.

For Skoda, part of the Volkswagen Group, India will be a key focus market. In the next five years it plans to sell 100,000 units, up from the current figure of 13,000 units.

“We expect India to be among the top three global markets for us in the next five years. Out of the 100,000 units we plan to sell, 60% of the volumes will be driven by the small car market,” said Kuehl. Going forward, India will also emerge as Skoda's export hub for the Asean region. “We are looking for more land in Aurangabad to expand our production facilities,” is all Kuehl revealed.

On the pricing front, the company is working towards being more competitive by increasing the localisation content. At present Skoda fleet in India has an average localisation content of 15%. The company is looking to achieve 50% localisation in the next 18 months.

Ford launches engine plant in India

Ford Motor Co has started operations at its engine assembly plant in India, the U.S carmaker said today, as it seeks a bigger share of the fast-growing market.

The plant, near Chennai in southern India, will initially make 60,000 engines annually for its Fiesta and Fusion models, starting with the 1.4-litre diesel Duratorq engines, it said. Ford will first aim the 50,000 diesel and 10,000 petrol engines at the local market, and then export them. It will have an eventual capacity of 2,50,000 engines.

"This facility will help position Ford India as a strategic manufacturing hub for low displacement powertrain engines within our Asia Pacific and Africa region," said Mr.Michael Boneham, President & Managing Director, Ford India.

"The domestic assembly of these engines will facilitate quicker time-to-market response, and greatly enhance the efficiencies of our operations," he said.

With nearly 50% local content in the diesel engines, Ford will be able to compete more effectively in the Indian market, where annual passenger car sales are forecast to nearly double to 2 million units by 2010. Ford India, which set up shop in India in 1995, said in January it would invest $500 million to double manufacturing capacity to 2,00,000 units by 2010 and make a small car to compete in the dominant segment of the market. Leader Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, Hyundai Motor and Tata Motors have a lion's share of the market for small cars presently.

Several others have also announced their intent to make small cars to take on the Tata Nano, priced at just above $2,500, and scheduled to go on sale later in the year.

Italy's Ducati to launch superbikes in India

Italy’s Ducati is gearing up to set the racing circuit on fire. The world’s largest producer of racing bikes is planning to bring motorsports to India and has started preparations to get the MotoGP motorcycling championship here.

Ducati Motor Holding CEO Gabriele Del Torchio told ET, “I have asked MotoGP CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta to bring the Grand Prix event to India. If this event can happen in Qatar, China, Malaysia and Australia, I think India also has a great chance with vast improvements in infrastructure and the F1 circuit plans firming up. If all goes well, we shall have a full-fledged motorcycle racing season in India soon.”

Ducati, a relatively-small company compared to Honda, Yamaha and KTM, has won 14 of the last 17 World Superbikes Championship titles and has picked up the maximum number of trophies in all global competitions. It won both the top Constructors’ and Riders’ world titles in MotoGP 2007. The Italian bike company is also one of the largest sponsors of motor racing championships and is eyeing a long-term potential in India. “With the technology to produce the world’s fastest bikes, we see a great potential for superbikes in India,” Mr Torchio said.

Ducati, whose bikes are priced between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 50 lakh, is looking at developing a market for its products. A Delhi-based infrastructure company, JP Associates has announced plans to develop a permanent Rs 1,500-crore F1 race track in Greater Noida, which can used for bike racing as well. These events generate huge funds though sponsorships, ticket sales, endorsements and media rights, similar to the cricket extravaganza IPL.

To move the proposal with the Indian government, Ducati’s Indian partner, Precision Motor India is working with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. Its CEO Ashish Chordia said, “We want to promote motorsports in India and cultivate the sporting culture. To organise the MotoGP championship in India, we just need an F1 track. We have sought the help of all auto makers and SIAM to move the matter faster and get the infrastructure in place.”

Ducati, which sold 40,000 bikes worldwide in 71 countries through a network of 800 dealers, will initially sell through two exclusive showrooms in Mumbai and Delhi. Early next year, three more exclusive showrooms will be added in Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai. Ducati superbikes with engine capacity between 700 cc and 1,100 cc generate an output of 90-180 horsepower and meet the Euro III emission norms. The company will import 50 bikes this year and likely to scale up if the response is good.

Renault-Nissan and Bajaj join hands for low-cost car

Bajaj Auto and the Renault-Nissan alliance on Monday announced that they will form a joint-venture company to develop, produce and market the car, code-named ULC (ultra-low cost)with wholesale price ranging from $2500. The new JV company will be 50% owned by Bajaj Auto, 25% by Renault and 25% by Nissan. Targeting the growing Indian new vehicle market, the ULC will be made at an all-new plant to be constructed in Chakan (Maharashtra) in India. Initial planned capacity will be 400,000 units per year. Sales will start in early 2011 in India, as a primary market, with growth potential in other emerging markets around the world. The feasibility has already extended into joint product evelopment and the project is on line to meet targeted performance & cost, company officials said. The company would initially invest Rs 1,000 cr in the venture. Renault and Bajaj will manufacture engines for the small car and LCV.

In-car entertainment - a booming market

In a world of traffic jams and pot-holed roads, half of our lives is spent on the road, driving or being driven. It’s but natural for Indians to load their cars with the latest in the in-car entertainment systems.

In a bid to bridge the gap between home entertainment and car entertainment further, music system companies are also offering spanky LCD screens to go with the DVD players. Convergence being the watchword. Consumers now expect car systems to offer them bluetooth connectivity with a USB port.

And why not, in-car-entertainment system makers have to quickly adapt to the changing entertainment trends. So blue-tooth connectivity to transfer songs from your mobile to the music systems is what the new age car drivers. Not to forget the option to connect the i-pod with the car music systems.

A lot of focus is also being put on infotainment. So navigational devices come as cool add-ons with several music systems for the car. How about getting all of this in one? Companies offer music systems that have a navigational device fitted on to the dashboard, with a microphone to attend calls, a parking camera to be able to park safe, roof mounted screens with DVD player, blue-tooth connectivity and game-port attached to the DVD.

Swift completes 2-lakh sales to become fastest selling car in India

Country's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki's runaway success with 'Swift' has crossed a new milestone in sales - two lakh units - with the car becoming one of the fastest selling models in India since its launch three years ago to achieve this feat.

"Maruti Swift has attained new benchmarks very swiftly. It has emerged as the fastest selling car in India by completing the two-lakh units sales mark in less than 36 months," a company official said.

The company launched this premium hatchback in petrol variant on May 25, 2005. In its first year of launch, it clocked sales of 61,200 units.

"The popularity of petrol version inspired the company to launch a diesel variant in January 2007, powered by much acclaimed and the most compact diesel engine in its category," he said.

At present, 60% of 'Swift' produced, are in diesel variant.

Besides, Maruti also registered a sale of 9,490 units of 'Swift' during April, the highest sale in a single month.

"It is the only model to undergo a face-lift in less than three years of its launch. The company launched a refreshed version of Swift earlier this year," the company official said.

According to the monthly data of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, Maruti sold 51,766 vehicles in the domestic market under all categories during April, a jump of 22.30 per cent over the previous year's corresponding sale of 42,326 units.

Ratan Tata among the biggest brains in business

After being chosen as one of the most influential people in the world by Time magazine, Mr.Ratan Tata has been named among the biggest brains in business by another US publication. The list of '73 Biggest Brains in Business', compiled by business publication Conde Nast Portfolio , features Tata for his 2,500 dollar car - Nano, along with the likes of media mogul Rupert Murdoch and chief executive of investment bank Goldman Sachs Lloyd Blankfein.

"Brilliance comes in many forms, whether it is founding a startup that kicks sand in Microsoft's face or creating an affordable car for the developing world. A small number of innovators influence the rest of the influencers in business," the magazine said in the accompanying report.

The list published in the latest issue of the magazine is further classified into five groups - game changers, connectors, tastemakers, rebels and upstarts. About Tata, the magazine said that he believes the future of the auto industry rests in the hands of people who do not yet drive. Tata Group, which recently snapped up British luxury brands Jaguar and Land Rover, has unveiled Tata Nano - the world's cheapest car.

"The model won't be sold in the US but has the potential to radically alter the market for manufacturers here. Tata-inspired followers are already revving up their engines: Nissan-Renault partnering with India's Bajaj Auto to develop a car by 2010 that will sell for less than 3,000 dollars.
"But except for Ford India, US companies can't produce a model this cheaply. Which means they risk being run over," the magazine noted.

Last week, Time magazine had named Ratan Tata as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Apart from these three names, others who have featured in the game changers category are JPMorgan Chase head Jamie Dimon, World Bank managing director Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt, software designer and co-founder of FriendFeed Paul Buchheit and anatomy professor at the University of Wisconsin James Thomson. The magazine talked to CEOs, economists and power players to prepare the list. The connectors group, which includes Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Bin, is described as those people "who know everyone who matters and can get them on the phone".

Another name in this group is Nobel Prize winner and Grameen Bank founder Muhammad Yunus, whose microfinance initiative has assisted about 7.5 million small business owners in Bangladesh. Designers and style setters are classified as tastemakers, which include the likes of BMW's chief of design Chris Bangle and well known media anchor Oprah Winfrey. Those who find a place in the upstarts category include Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott and artist Yue Minjun.

"The kind of brilliance were looking at is not measured in IQ. It manifests itself in work that is changing entire industries and influencing others," the report added.

The Hyundai ‘ Miles & Smiles rally’ was organized by Hyundai Motor India for its valued Verna and i10 customers – to give them a chance to gauge the mileage of their car, learn the techniques of fuel efficient driving and also win prizes in the process. The event was co-sponsored by State Bank of India (SBI) and the associate sponsor was Indian Oil Corporation Limited.

The concept of the rally was to promote fuel efficient driving habits among its Verna and i10 customers. Fossil fuel is becoming expensive and a sparse commodity, consequently judicious use of the fuel is a must, if we are to conserve this resource. In this, driving habits make a big difference. It not only contributes to savings on the part of the owners but also saves precious resources.

Before the start of the rally participants were briefed on the techniques of fuel efficient driving and driving styles which will improve the fuel efficiency of their vehicle considerably. The idea was simple. All participants tanked up at the nearby filling stations and their tanks were sealed which ensured that they could not refuel during the course of the rally.

Their trip meter was made Zero and the Odometer reading noted down by the organisers. To ensure absolute transparency the tank was filled up in the presence of the participants, sealed and entries were made in the log book. After this, they were flagged off on the rally. On return, the same procedure was followed. The amount of fuel consumed was measured and the participant who used the least amount of fuel was declared the winner. The contest was held for owners of both the petrol and diesel variants of the Verna. The rally covered an approximate distance of 110 Km and culminated in scenic Khandala

The rally was flagged off from the Hotel Intercontinental at 9:30 am. Drivers in both Petrol and Diesel categories for the Verna and the petrol i10 who got the best mileage out of their cars were given cash prizes. The winners in each category got a cash prize of Rs 15,000. The first and second runners up in both categories also received cash prizes worth Rs. 8,000/- & Rs. 5,000/- each.

Hyundai Motor India had launched its latest compact car on 31st October, 2007 marking the global debut of the i10. Yamaha Motor, the world’s second-largest motorcycle maker, will set up a joint venture with Mitsui to produce motorcycles in India.

Yamaha plans to replace its money-losing Indian motorcycle business with the new venture, called India Yamaha Motor, the Japan-based company said in a statement filed in the Tokyo Stock Exchange today. The unit will begin operating in April. The motorcycle maker said last month it will invest $174 million in the next three years to bolster business in India, where its sales trail behind bigger rival Honda Motor. The tie-up follows Mitsui, Japan’s second- largest trading company, buying a 3 per cent stake in Yamaha Motor last year.

“The reason for dissolving the old unit is because it has had losses since at least 2001," Yamaha spokesman Takashi Kitagawa said at a press briefing on Wednesday. “The company will rebuild the unit with help of Mitsui."

Motorcycle makers are building more factories and introducing new models in India as economic growth boosts demand in the world’s second-largest motorcycle market. Yamaha had forecast motorcycle demand in India to increase to 9.1 million units in 2010 from 7.3 million units last year. The Indian unit posted an operating loss of 8.8 billion yen in 2007. Mitsui, Japan’s second-largest trading company, bought a 3 per cent stake in Yamaha Motor last year. The two companies set up a team to discuss joint programs including purchasing and distribution.

Tokyo-based Mitsui will take a 30 per cent stake in the new Indian venture, Yamaha Motor said. India Yamaha Motor will utilize the same factory and office facilities used by its predecessor Yamaha Motor India., the statement said. Yamaha manufactures motorcycles in the country at Surajpur, near New Delhi in the north. Yamaha currently employs about 2000 employees in India.

The alternative fuel fever has caught up with Chennai-based TVS Motor Company, synonymous with ‘TVS Scooty’. Having entered the electric scooter segment, the company is exploring LPG and CNG two wheelers.

S Srinivas, general manager, marketing, TVS Motor Company, said that the company has been looking at LPG and CNG-run motorcycles, scooters and scooterettes. The company has its R & D centre at Hosur near Bangalore.

However, a time frame for entering the new segments has not been decided yet. The company’s first foray into alternative fuels has begun with ‘Scooty Teenz Electric’ which will make its debut at Ahmedabad.

Rolled out from the company’s Mysore plant, the 800 watt scooter generates an average range of 40 kms per nine hours of charge. This can increase by 50 per cent if the rider opts for lower speeds by using a feature called Range Selector.

Priced at Rs 32,500 (ex-showroom Ahmedabad), the vehicle comes with a load carrying capacity of 130 kgs with a pillion rider. The lead-acid batteries used for the vehicle are tested to last for 1.5 years if the user’s riding average is 25 kms. The company has decided to launch the vehicle at Ahmedabad owing to the high concentration of two wheelers in the city and female riders.

To start with, TVS expects the vehicle to sell around 500 units in Ahmedabad. Following its launch in other western states and other parts of the country by April, the sales are expected to touch 8000 units. The Scooty Teenz petrol has sold 800 units a month in Ahmedabad and is priced at Rs 25,000.

Carmaker Fiat India has reduced prices of its flagship model Palio Stile in response to tax cuts for small cars announced in India's national budget for 2008-09. The three variants of Palio Stile will cost up to Rs.12,000 less from March 1.

"We welcome the finance minister's move on reduction in Cenvat (central value-added tax) rate and have decided to pass on the benefit to our customers," a company spokesperson said. Fiat India is a 50:50 joint venture between Fiat Group Automobiles SPA and Tata Motors.

Last week, Tata Motors lowered prices of its popular Tata Indica models by Rs.12,000 to Rs.16,000.

F1 updates : Ferrari still quickest - Massa

With ten days to go until the first grand prix of 2008, Ferrari's Felipe Massa has questioned suggestions that McLaren's new car moved ahead of the pack at the recent final group test of the pre-season.

Previously, although Ferrari conducted some of its more recent on-track preparations away from the bulk of its opponents, the Maranello based team was widely acknowledged to have produced the fastest single seater. But to the Italian newspaper La Stampa, Massa insists that the true pecking order may not have changed at all at the recent Barcelona test.

"When your rivals are testing for qualifying conditions, it is obvious that they will be quicker than you if you are testing for the races," the Brazilian said.

"We did qualifying testing the previous week, and I beat the track record. In Australia we will understand (the real situation), for sure," he added.

Meanwhile, 26-year-old Massa revealed that he has no plans to start looking around the paddock for an alternate team, after joining Ferrari as a race driver in 2006.

There was no ‘formula’ for motor racing during the years 1894, when the first ‘organised’ motor race took place from Paris to Rouen, until 1900. The then existing vehicles were simply raced. However, a differentiation was made between those cars on the basis of their method of propulsion (petrol or steam), and their number of seats.

During that time, cars always had at least two seats and it was not until the end of 1920 that single-seater cars were used for racing. The ‘invention’ of the rear-view mirror made an important contribution to this development, since one of the mechanic’s tasks in the 2-seaters was to warn the driver that someone was trying to overtake him!

The ‘FIA Formula-One’ World Championship was created early in 1950 and its first even was held on 13th May 1950 at ‘Silverstone’ Tracks in the U.K., which continues to be one of the most sought after ones even these days.

Your car is your mobile castle these days--and so deserves to be appropriately outfitted with the latest gadgets. And there's no shortage of gear for doing that.

At the recent Consumer Electronics Show, equipment makers of all stripes were on hand to show off their latest and greatest for making your car into something far more than a mode of transportation. The newest global positioning satellite systems, for instance, let you talk your way to a destination without ever taking your hands off the wheel. Other gadgets aim to help you buff up your ride's status symbol. Still others cater directly to the kid-toting crowd.

Start with the fun stuff. Bazooka, Earthquake, Titanium Power and Magnadyne--these aren't exactly weapons but companies with sound systems that will make the ground shake and put a dent in your eardrums. We were overwhelmed by the JackHammer SuperWoofer from MTX Audio. There's nothing lightweight about this subwoofer. It weighs in at 369 pounds. It incorporates magnets powerful enough to wipe out the data on credit cards that come within 25 feet. This is the ultimate, "competitive" sound system.

Frequent nighttime drivers might appreciate the Flir PathFindIR thermal imaging camera, which can spot animals and pedestrians up to 2,000 feet away--much sooner than you can eyeball them. This is no toy system; military and police vehicles have tried out this technology. It's also priced accordingly.

You can get lost evaluating all the GPS systems available these days. Happily most are priced within the budget of typical consumers. At the recent Consumer Electronics Show, the Magellan Maestro Elite was the only on-board system that lets you use Google Local search to look up locations. Garmin's nuvi 880 features speech recognition so that you can talk to your direction system, rather than touching a screen to figure out where to go next.

Microsoft and Ford Motor have created Sync, an "in-car connectivity system" that first debuted last year but will become more widespread in 2008. The latest Sync is designed to generate vehicle diagnostic reports and automatically call 911 if an air bag goes off in an accident. And here's the cool part: Sync also lets motorists call up songs on their iPods and other MP3 players via voice commands. Ford plans to make Sync available in most of its high-end vehicles by the end of the year, but it can be purchased separately, too.

There are other ways to make gadgets work in your car even if they weren't exactly built that way. Add Scosche's BlueLife DIY Bluetooth Receiver into a car that isn't equipped with Bluetooth and your cell phone and music devices will get channeled through the car speakers.

Sirius and Ford together have developed a "Travel Link" navigation system, which the carmaker will roll out during 2008. The subscription service features an in-dash screen that provides live information about local gas prices, traffic conditions, sports scores and local movie listings. Included in the hardware for Travel Link, although technically separate from the service, is a 10-gigabyte voice-command "jukebox" that can hold up to 2,400 songs and display complete track information and album cover art thanks to technology provided by Gracenote.

Then there's Azentek's multimedia PC--the Atlas CPC-1200, designed explicitly for cars. It uses an Intel Core Duo processor and can do anything you need--run Microsoft Vista, play high-definition radio, run a GPS system.

If that seems too elaborate, there are ways to amuse your children in the car for a more modest price. Sirius Satellite Radio has launched an automotive satellite TV service. Only three channels so far--but they are the ones that most kids want to see: Nickelodeon, the Disney Channel and a special mobile edition of the Cartoon Network. It's available in some Chrysler models now, and more broadly available in the second quarter of this year.

India's top car maker Maruti Suzuki Ltd Friday announced a reduction in prices of some of its models following Finance Minister P. Chidambaram's proposal to trim excise duty by four percent. The prices of all six models that qualify for the lower excise benefit - Maruti 800, Omni, Zen, WagonR, Swift Diesel and Alto - will be reduced. The price reduction ranges from Rs.6,500 for Maruti 800 to Rs.18,030 for Swift Diesel (ex-showroom Delhi), the company said in a statement Friday evening.

Tata Motors has reduced the prices of Indica and Indigo model by Rs 8,500-Rs 15,300. The price cut is a result of the 4 per cent excise duty cut announced by Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Friday. While the Indica will see a price cut ranging between Rs 8,500-RS 14,600, the Indigo compact sedan (CS) will witness a drop of Rs 12,700- Rs 15,300 across variants. The company has also cut prices of its commercial vehicle range, which includes trucks and buses, by 2 per cent.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd intends to cut the prices of its Santro by Rs.12,000 while its Getz and i10 would be cheaper by Rs.14,000 and Rs.12,000 respectively.

According to an official of General Motors, the company would reduce the prices of its Spark and Aveo U-VA models. The price reduction will be between Rs.7,500 and Rs.14,000.

Among the tyre manufacturers, JK Tyre and Industries Ltd has announced its intention to reduce the prices of its radial and bias tyres fitted on trucks, car and farm vehicles from March 1, 2008, onwards.

K.J. Rao, chief financial officer of Ceat Ltd, said the company would pass on the two percent reduction in excise duty to the customers.

The biggest draw at the international trade fair being organised at St. Petersburg from March 11 to 14 will be the Tata Nano, the world's cheapest car, tagged at just $2,500. According to the organisers, the Russians are eager to see the car, though it is not clear whether the car will be brought here.

Around 140 Indian companies will be participating in the trade fair with those from 16 other countries, including Germany, Denmark, Britain and China, will participate in the four-day event.

"The first day of the fair will be devoted to Indian industry to commemorate the Year of Russia, which is now under way in India," said Igor Kirsanov, director general of the Restek Company and organiser of the event.

The latest innovations in the fields of engineering, metalworking, metallurgical products and car parts will be displayed at the four pavilions of the Lenexpo exhibition complex. The huge Indian delegation to the fair in St Petersburg is a clear indication that Indian companies are interested in cooperation with their Russian counterparts. The Indian companies are keen on supplying car parts for the automobile assembly plants here.

Toyota launched its assembly plant in 2007 and General Motors in February this year. Nissan, Suzuki and Hyundai will also set up their ventures soon. Ford has its plant in the Leningrad region.

According to Mikhail Oseyevsky, deputy governor of St Petersburg, besides the automotive industry, Indian businessmen are also interested in cooperation in the information technology and metallurgical sectors. Alongside the Indian delegation, companies from the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Denmark, Britain, China, Turkey, South Korea, Austria, Croatia, Belarus and Ukraine will participate in the fair.

Global giants such as General Motors, Ford, Electrolux, Siemens and Bosch will showcase their products in the exhibition.

India's largest two-wheeler maker Hero Honda on Saturday reported a 5.7 per cent dip in motorcycle sales during February at 2,65,431 units, against 2,80,515 units in the same month last year. The company said it expects sales to improve post the reduction in excise duty. It is passing on the entire benefit of the duty reduction to the customer and has cut prices by up to Rs 2,400.

"Hero Honda has taken the voice of the customer to the government, and consequently the excise duty on two-wheelers has been reduced to 12 per cent from 16 per cent. This is a welcome move, and we are happy to pass on the entire benefit to customers. The reduction in excise duty cut will enable us to draw more customers to our fold," Hero Honda Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer Pawan Munjal said in a statement. He said issues like credit financing have not been addressed, which were required to push sales.

"The basic factors causing the industry slowdown still remain unattended. Credit Financing has been withdrawn in some key markets, while interest rates on consumer loans also remain very high. This credit squeeze continues to be the most critical factor adversely impacting industry growth," Munjal said.

Bajaj Auto Ltd, the second-biggest motorcycle maker, on Saturday said vehicle sales in February fell 9 per cent to 183,807 units from 202,212 units last year. It said motorcycles sales fell 8 percent to 158,662 units from 171,780 units, and total two-wheelers sales also fell 8 percent to 159,508 units from 174,220 units.

Sales of motorised three-wheelers fell 13 per cent to 24,299 units from 27,992 units last year, Bajaj added in a statement. The company, which is studying the feasibility of making a $3,000 car with Renault and Nissan Motor Co, said exports rose 65 per cent to 63,182 units from 38,228 units. Bajaj said it expected its focus on 125 cc motorcycles and international markets to result in positive overall growth for 2008/09.

Car market leader Maruti Suzuki India Limited said it has passed on the full benefit of excise duty reduction to customers. The company has announced price reduction in all six models that qualify for the lower excise benefit: Maruti 800, Omni, Zen, Wagon R, Swift Diesel and Alto.

Hyundai said the company has decided to pass on the benefit of the excise duty cut to customers on three models, Santro, i10 and the Getz with immediate effect.

We will be cutting the prices of our small cars between Rs 7,500 and Rs 14,000, General Motors India vice-president P Balendran said.

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has proposed that the excise duty on small cars, two, three wheelers, buses and their chassis is brought down to 12 per cent from 16 per cent, while in case of hybrid cars the duty will be lowered to 14 per cent from the current 24 per cent.

Small car is defined as one with petrol engine capacity upto 1.2 litres and diesel engine upto 1.4 litres and 4 metres length.

Honda Siel Cars India senior general manager G. Sen expressed disappointment that the gap in excise duty between small cars and big cars has been further widened, but exuded confidence that the reduction in excise duty on hybrid cars would enable the company to import hybrid vehicles from the parent Japanese car company.

Hyundai Motors India Ltd. vice-president (marketing and sales) Arvind Saxena said the government decision to reduce excise duties was a welcome decision. The move will help the auto industry grow, specially the small cars segment which constitutes 78 per cent of the market, he said.

Honda Siel Cars India on Monday said that it expects to receive homologation for its Civic Hybrid from the Automotive Research Association of India within the next 10 days.

The company also said that while it did not expect much volumes from the hybrid car, it was primarily to showcase its technological competitiveness.

“Even if we sell 300-500 units of Civic Hybrid, it is okay. Our purpose is to show the technology which has been present in other countries,” said Mr Masahiro Takedagawa, President and CEO, Honda Siel Cars India, at the inauguration of its facility in Greater Noida.

Mr Takedagawa said that the company planned to sell 90,000 units next fiscal, a growth of 35 per cent compared to the current fiscal. Its new sports utility vehicle CR-V, sedans Accord and Civic Hybrid would contribute to increased sales. Honda is also looking at expanding its dealership network over the next three years to establish its presence in newer cities.

“By the end of March, we would have 80 dealerships in 51 cities. In the next three years, we would double our dealerships to 160 by adding 39 new cities,” said Mr Jnaneswar Sen, Senior General Manager, Sales.

Honda has expanded its capacity at its plant in Greater Noida to one lakh units from 50,000 units. Besides this, the company’s second plant which is being commissioned at Rajasthan could also be scaled to over 2.5 lakh units per annum from its initial capacity of 60,000 units.

The company plans to use its Greater Noida facility to manufacture its current range of products and the second plant in Rajasthan for compact cars. This includes Jazz, a premium hatchback, which is being considered, and another small car for which the company has begun work and expects to roll out in three- four years time.

Maruti receives appreciation award from CBEC

The domestic auto industry got a major boost with the Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, announcing a 4 percentage point reduction in excise duty on two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger cars, buses and chassis to 12 per cent from the current 16 per cent.

In the Union Budget 2008-09, the Government reduced excise duty on two-wheelers to help the segment revive after witnessing months of declining sales due to high interest rates. The Government also extended a similar reduction in the excise duty of small cars to make India a hub for small car.

In February 2006, the Government had reduced the duty on small car from 24 per cent to 16 per cent. It was at that time that specifications for the small car had been laid out in terms of length and engine size. As per these guidelines, cars with length less than 4,000 mm and a petrol engine of 1.2 litre or less and a diesel engine of 1.5 litre would qualify for the small car benefits. While companies such as Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai are already exporting their compact cars from India, global carmakers such as Volkswagen, Honda, Nissan-Renault are also making additional investments to leverage these incentives. However, with reduction in the excise duty of small cars, the auto industry is of the view that the gap between the premium car and small car would further widen which may affect the sales of the luxury cars.

In case of hybrids, the Budget has also offered an excise duty reduction on hybrid cars from 24 to 14 per cent. The proposed move would help the domestic companies such as Tatas and Mahindras that are gearing up in this direction. But it would also help companies like Honda that would be introducing its Civic Hybrid shortly by a reduction in the countervailing duty to 104 per cent from 114 per cent.

The Government has also reduced the excise duty on electric cars from 8 per cent to nil.

“However, full excise duty exemption for electric cars may not necessarily lead to reduction in its price as the duty on input costs except for a few items was still at 16 per cent. Hence, there will not be any impact on the output price as well,” said Mr Chetan Maini, Managing Director of Reva electric car.

TVS Motor Company will launch a single-spark 125cc Flame in March even while the legal tug-of-war with Bajaj Auto continues on the twin-spark version. Run-up to Budget 2008-09. The bike will be rolled out across the country and not confined to a single metro. The company had earlier targeted Chennai as the first market for the twin-spark version in December.

Venu Srinivasan, chairman and managing director, TVS Motor, told that the company would also launch the fuel-injected Apache and the three-wheeler in March. The electric scooter, which has already been launched in Gujarat, will be available across the country in 2008-09. However, it is the Flame that TVS Motor is banking on for volumes and to make a significant impact in the executive segment, which is the mainstay of Hero Honda today.

In the process, it hopes that the bike will take up a substantial chunk of its motorcycle portfolio during 2008-09. At present, the company’s entry segment model, Star, accounts for nearly 80 per cent of its bike sales, but the margins are really little to write home about. This is understandable given that it is priced in the region of Rs 35,000. In contrast, the Flame, which will be closer to the Rs 46,000-mark, will clearly be a bigger money spinner.

“We believe that it has the potential to do good numbers, and ideally, take up over 35 per cent of our bike range. This is the only three-valve bike based on patented AVL technology licensed to TVS,” Srinivasan said.

In terms of price and features, it will be part of the segment now occupied by the Super Splendor, Gladiator, Shine etc. The entry-level executive segment, where the Splendor (and the slightly dearer Passion) rules the roost is the one that posts the big numbers. It is here that Bajaj Auto’s 125cc XCD has been slotted with an intention of weaning customers away from 100cc bikes.

Srinivasan said that TVS would launch more products in 2008-09, including two new bikes and a completely restyled Scooty. Two-wheeler sales have been hit by the economic slowdown and tight financing norms. Barring Hero Honda, other players have had a hard time and this could well continue next fiscal till Diwali when a turnaround is expected. As for its Indonesia project for the Neo step-thru, TVS has targeted sales of 60,000 units this calendar. Plans are also under way to expand its presence in the Asean region by setting up assembly units in Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.

American car-maker Ford is expected to finalise the deal with Indian conglomerate Tata for the sale of luxury brands, Jaguar and Land Rover, by next week, media report here said. Run-up to Budget 2008-09

"The two sides, which have been in exclusive talks since the beginning of the year, are expected to sign a deal worth up to $2 billion next Wednesday or shortly afterwards," The Times said in a report on its online edition today.

According to the report, Ford is expected to seal the sale of Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata, next week after the American car-maker recently agreed to pump hundreds of millions of pounds into the pension fund to smooth the process. The deal is expected to be welcomed by unions, who believe that there is no immediate threat to British jobs or manufacturing, it added. On January 3, Ford had named Tata as the preferred bidder for Jaguar and Land Rover. The Times also said that Ford has pledged to pump in 300 million pounds into the pension fund to clear its deficit. "It has also given assurances over the long-term supply of engines and some other components to the two marques to ease union fears about their future...," it pointed out.

"The two marques had to be sold together because Ford had merged a number of their operations and supplies. The official announcement is being timed for after the Geneva Motor Show, so that the two companies can try to promote their products at the key European showcase," the report added.

TVS files plea in HC seeking to set aside single judge order on Flame

TVS Motor Company Limited on Wednesday filed an appeal in the Madras High Court, seeking to set aside a single judge order restraining it from manufacturing, marketing, selling and exporting two or three wheelers with an internal combustion engine, infringing Bajaj Auto's patent.

The appeal is likely to come up for hearing tomorrow. Justice P Jyothimani had on February 16 granted an interim injunction on an application filed by Bajaj Auto Limited, Pune, restraining TVS Chennai from using the technology in any manner and invention described in the patent.

In its appeal, TVS submitted that the single judge failed to consider the specific pleading and evidence adduced by it to show that TVS Flame 125 model was based on adoption of the twin spark plug arrangement patented by Honda in US.

"The functioning of the three valve arrangement was based on the patent granted in favour of AVL in US, licensed to TVS by AVL. The entire IC engine of TVS was distinct from the Bajaj patent and thus does not at all infringe the Bajaj patent specifications and claims of Bajaj," it said.

The judge failed to note that in the absence of Bajaj making out any case of infringement or satisfying the prescribed test, an injunction cannot be granted, TVS contended.

The judge did not apply the correct test of comparing Bajaj's claim as envisaged in its patent specification with the product of TVS, it said.

"The judge failed to note that Bajaj filed the suit without seeing the TVS product and the allegations of infringement were based on guess work. Having come to the conclusion that there are triable issues, the judge ought to have relegated the parties to the trial," TVS said.

The goal of an airbag is to slow the passenger's forward motion as evenly as possible in a fraction of a second. There are three parts to an airbag that help to accomplish this feat:

1. The bag itself is made of a thin, nylon fabric, which is folded into the steering wheel or dashboard or, more recently, the seat or door.
2. The sensor is the device that tells the bag to inflate. Inflation happens when there is a collision force equal to running into a brick wall at 10 to 15 miles per hour (16 to 24 km per hour). A mechanical switch is flipped when there is a mass shift that closes an electrical contact, telling the sensors that a crash has occurred. The sensors receive information from an accelerometer built into a microchip.
3. The airbag's inflation system reacts sodium azide (NaN3) with potassium nitrate (KNO3) to produce nitrogen gas. Hot blasts of the nitrogen inflate the airbag.

Early efforts to adapt the airbag for use in cars bumped up against prohibitive prices and technical hurdles involving the storage and release of compressed gas. Researchers wondered if there was enough room in a car for a gas canister, whether the gas would remain contained at high pressure for the life of the car, how the bag could be made to expand quickly and reliably at a variety of operating temperatures and without emitting an ear-splitting bang.

They needed a way to set off a chemical reaction that would produce the nitrogen that would inflate the bag. Small solid-propellant inflators came to the rescue in the 1970s.

The inflation system is not unlike a solid rocket booster (see How Rocket Engines Work for details). The airbag system ignites a solid propellant, which burns extremely rapidly to create a large volume of gas to inflate the bag. The bag then literally bursts from its storage site at up to 200 mph (322 kph) -- faster than the blink of an eye! A second later, the gas quickly dissipates through tiny holes in the bag, thus deflating the bag so you can move.

Even though the whole process happens in only one-twenty-fifth of a second, the additional time is enough to help prevent serious injury. The powdery substance released from the airbag, by the way, is regular cornstarch or talcum powder, which is used by the airbag manufacturers to keep the bags pliable and lubricated while they're in storage.

Taming the beast - driving without driver aids

A major talking point for the new season surrounds the arrival of the Standardised Electronic Control Unit, or SECU, and with it the elimination of driver aids such as traction control and engine braking systems. The SECU enables the FIA to police an article of the regulations central to the ‘DNA’ of Formula One racing - that “the driver shall drive the car alone and unaided”. But, what should we expect as this new era dawns? And how difficult is it to tame a 2008-spec Formula One car? Double world champion Fernando Alonso and Renault team mate, Nelson Piquet Jr, explain…

“It is in the low-speed (second gear) corners that you notice the difference because that is where the traction control would normally kick in,” reveals Alonso. “That means you have to change your driving style quite dramatically. Last year we used to go straight to full throttle, but now we need to be gentler and feather the throttle.

“Another difference this year occurs when you get wheelspin because, in the absence of traction control, it becomes impossible to stop it - even if you back off the throttle. When you have wheelspin, the revs rise and you have more torque, which makes the wheels spin even more. Therefore, to deliver a good lap time, it is essential to avoid wheelspin through all parts of the corner, and that is not easy.”

Alonso also highlights the variation in steering inputs: “With traction control we used to get more understeer at the exit of the corner, but this is no longer an issue. Rather, from midcorner onwards, the car oversteers and slides more, which again influences your driving style and the racing line.”

The new regulations have also removed the engine braking systems (EBS) that used to moderate the locking of the rear wheels, and give greater stability, under heavy braking. It is the loss of this system, rather than the loss of traction control, that Piquet believes has the greatest impact.

“The biggest difference you notice with the 2008 cars is not the loss of traction control, but the absence of engine braking control because the car is much more unstable, especially on used tyres,” says Nelson. “When you look at the telemetry, the brake pressure is now much less compared to last year. With EBS you could brake much harder; if you did that without the electronics, you will simply lock up your wheels.”

Alonso echoes Piquet’s sentiments and emphasises the need to adapt set-up accordingly. “Without EBS you do suffer with locking of the rear tyres because stopping a car travelling at 300 km/h is not easy,” he explains. “You have to adapt the set-up of the car to compensate for the loss of all the systems. It will be down to the driver to adapt and I am convinced that as the season develops we will have forgotten what it was like to drive with these aids.”

And yet, despite all the changes, the speed of the cars remains almost unaffected. The loss of the driver aids represents a loss of between three and four tenths per lap, a difference that is unnoticeable to the naked eye. More important, perhaps, is what the fans now know they are watching: 22 of the world’s best drivers, in total control of the most demanding racing cars on the planet.

Tata Motors' Nano, easily the world's most talked-about car these days, will make its international debut at the 78th Geneva Motor Show in the first week of March. The five-door hatchback that costs just Rs 100,000 ($2,500), making it the world's cheapest, was unveiled in January this year at the Auto Expo here. Nano would be among Tata Motors' exhibits at the show, a company spokesperson said here.

Sales of Nano, nicknamed the people's car for its affordable pricing that will make four-wheelers available to millions of middle-class people who hitherto rode two-wheelers, is expected to start in the second half of this year. Although the car has its share of critics, it has undeniably put India on the global automotive map and has triggered a race among leading car makers to match the Nano price-point. Already, car manufacturers Renault and Nissan are eyeing a $3000 car.

The Nano, which Tata Motors has said meets all safety and emission norms, will share the limelight with top marques from around the world that are expected at the show. This year's edition of the Geneva Motor Show will mark the 11th year of participation for Tata Motors.

Skoda has introduced its second generation Skoda Fabia in India as a 2008 model. The Skoda Fabia is a 5-door large hatchback which was introduced to the world at the March 2007 Geneva Auto Show. The first generation of Skoda Fabia has sold since 1999 and has been a very successful model with over 15 Lakh of them being sold in Europe and other countries.

The Fabia's anti-lock braking system (ABS) ensures maximum control of the vehicle in emergency braking situations. Its Motor Speed Regulator (MSR) and dual brake assist system ensure utmost safety while driving. The model also features dual front air bags that provide cushioning and reduce the impact in case of collisions. Fabia resembles the Maruti Swift in looks, but it is longer than the Ford Fusion.

ICML plans global SUV, invest Rs 800 crore by 2010

Presently Sonalika group’s International Cars and Motors (ICML) is working on a sports utility vehicle (SUV) model for which it has joined hands with an international design house and will invest Rs 800 crore by 2010 for expanding overall capacity.

Deepak Mittal, MD, ICML stated, “All we can say is that we have tied up with a global design house to produce a global SUV model, which would be sold around the world. The project may take over three years.”

ICML is the newest participant to the Indian MUV market and had recently instigated its flagship vehicle ‘Rhino Rx’.

“Our aim is to become number one player in the domestic multi-utility vehicle market by 2010 and we would invest an additional Rs 800 crore to more than double our production capacity by then to achieve this goal,” Mittal added.

The company functions out of a constructing facility and has already invested Rs 200 crore to establish the plant. Additionally, it would invest Rs 800 crore to take the manufacturing capacity to 5,000 units per month from the existing present 2,000 units. Mr. Mittal alleged that the company would start various novel models comprising a Common Rail Diesel injection (CRDi) engine-powered Rhino and a SUV to enhance country sales.

“ICML is presently working on a CRDi engine for Rhino which is expected to be showcased at the Auto-expo next year,” he also said.

ICML has launched its flagship MUV Rhino Rx in select markets of north India and is planning for a pan-India launch by October-November this year.

F1 Updates : Schumacher back for Ferrari next week

Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher will return to testing action for Ferrari next week, when he participates in the team’s final pre-season test at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya.

Schumacher, who last tested in late 2007, will join Kimi Raikkonen in Spain on Monday, as Ferrari begin a three-day session to finalise their on-track preparations for the coming season with their F2008 machine.

Meanwhile, Ferrari wound up their current Barcelona session on Friday, with Felipe Massa and official tester Luca Badoer carrying out a full race-weekend simulation, starting with the third free practice session, followed by the three qualifying sessions and the Grand Prix, along with all the relevant trackside procedures.

Massa successfully completed the simulation. Badoer, however, had to stop in the final race stint because of an oil leak. Massa ultimately completed 95 laps, with a best time of 1m 20.508s, while Badoer managed 75, his fastest a 1m 21.808s.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) and Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone Ltd (MPSEZL) signed an agreement for a mega car terminal, expected to be operational by December 2008, at Mundra in Kutch district of Gujarat.

The agreement was signed by Mr Shinzo Nakanishi, Managing Director and CEO, MSIL, and Mr Gautam S. Adani, Chairman and MD, MPSEZL, at Mundra Port in the presence of senior officials from MSIL & MPSEZL.

The initial investment in the project is expected to be around Rs 100 crore. Of this, MPSEZL will invest Rs 60 crore in setting up infrastructure at the port. MSIL will invest Rs 40 crore to set up a Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) centre at the port premises. MPSEZL is planning to augment the port infrastructure in due course of time, a company spokesman said.

Maruti Suzuki will commence export operations at Mundra Port from January 2009. In view of increasing export volumes, it will continue exports from Mumbai as well. This mega car terminal's PDI Centre, spread over 7,500 square metres, would conduct the final quality check before the cars are loaded on ships for export. The Rs 40 crore being invested in this facility is part of the Rs. 9,000-crore investment plan announced by MSIL and Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) of Japan. MSIL, a subsidiary of SMC, is the leader in passenger cars and MPVs in India, accounting for almost 55 per cent of total industry sales. It offers 10 models, ranging from the people¿s car Maruti 800 to the stylish hatch-back Swift, SX4 Sedan and luxury SUV Grand Vitara.

Listed on the BSE and NSE, the company had a net sales turnover of $3.25 billion and net profit of $347 million 2006-07.

Mundra Port and SEZ is India's largest private sector port and SEZ, having handled over 20 million tonnes of wide range of cargo including bulk, break bulk, liquid, containers as well as automobiles during first nine months of 2007-2008. The SEZ which is planned over 32,000 acres of land will be self-contained with power, water, social infrastructure, airport, railway line, banking services etc and will house variety of manufacturing and servicing units.

Alto crosses one million unit production mark

Car market leader Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) has rolled out the millionth unit of its bestselling hatchback Alto, since its launch in September 2000.

The company produced the millionth unit of Alto last evening at its Gurgaon facility, MSIL said in a statement. Alto crossed one million-unit production mark in seven year and five months, of which the last five lakh units were produced in 25 months. The car is India's bestselling hatchback with sales of an average 20,000 units every month.

In November last year, MSIL sold 22,784 units of Alto, which were the highest ever sales for the model in a month since its launch. The company has also exported 1.5 lakh Alto units from its Gurgaon facility. Alto has become the third model for MSIL to cross the million-unit mark after entry-level Maruti 800 and Omni.

The company sells three models of Alto Standard, Alto Lx and Alto Lxi with the top end Lxi outselling the other two.

Hyundai Motor India Inaugurates New Plant

Hyundai Motor India Ltd commissioned operations at its second manufacturing plant at Sriperumbudur in a glittering function which included VIPs, industry and political leaders, HMI`s overseas and domestic business partners, members of the national and international media. Also present for the inauguration was the Chairman & CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, Mong-Koo Chung, who had flown in from Korea specially for the inauguration.

In a decade long history in India, marked by several remarkable milestones, this is perhaps Hyundai Motor India`s most significant achievement. With the commissioning of this new plant Hyundai Motor India is capable of producing 600,000 units per year doubling its present capacity of 300,000 units per annum. The new plant is located within the same 525 acre plot in Sriperumbudur adjacent to the first plant.

Inaugurating the plant, the Hon`ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Dr Kalaignar M Karunanidhi congratulated Hyundai for its dramatic growth, commenting that the company`s growth had paralleled the state`s rapid industrial development. The new plant will be dedicated largely to the production of Hyundai`s latest offering - the i10, winner of the most prestigious `Car of the Year` awards from the leading automotive magazines and TV channels like Business Standard Motoring, CNBC-TV18 Auto Car, the NDTV Car & Bike and the Overdrive magazine. More importantly, the commissioning of the second plant means that Hyundai Motor India`s status as a global manufacturing hub for all small car models from Hyundai is established. Not surprisingly, Hyundai Motor India`s export destinations are expected to increase from 73 to 90 countries by the end of 2008. Construction of the second plant began in November 2005 and was completed in a record of 19 months. Hyundai has committed a total investment of US $1 billion for the next phase. With the commissioning of the new plant, the company has set a manufacturing target of 5.3 lakh units for 2008.

To support the domestic growth, the company has already strengthened its dealer network from 183 to 230 in 2007; by the end of 2008, it expects to expand this to a 300-strong network. Stylish, comfortable

The People’s Car, designed with a family in mind, has a roomy passenger compartment with generous leg space and head room. It can comfortably seat four persons. BMW to roll out X5 diesel hybrid at Geneva

BMW is setting out to silence critics of big, gas-guzzling SUVs with a new diesel-hybrid-powered X5 concept that it claims is as economical and clean-running as a modern sedan.

The seven-seat X5 Vision concept will be unveiled at next week's Geneva motor show. It's the latest installment in BMW's Efficient Dynamics program, which highlights the reduction in consumption and CO2 emissions expected when all of BMW's future driveline, electrical and aerodynamic developments are brought together in one vehicle.

BMW says the X5 Vision gets 36.2 mpg and produces 172 g/km of CO2--more than 6 mpg and 42 g/km better than the most environmentally friendly X5 on sale today, the 235-hp, turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder diesel 3.0d. The X5 Vision carries an advanced hybrid drivetrain that BMW is already testing in various prototypes on German roads. It plans to introduce the powertrain in upcoming models such as the new X6 and the 5 Series-based Progressive Activity Sedan. BMW also hints that a production version of the X5 Vision may arrive soon.

"This is no pie-in-the-sky project," says Klaus Draeger, head of development at BMW. "All of the features are production-feasible. We could easily and without too much delay apply the various technology featured on our latest concept to existing showroom models." The X5 Vision's powertrain is different from the full hybrid system unveiled on the X6 ActiveHybrid at last year's Frankfurt show. The X5 Vision's powertrain is a mild hybrid with a diesel engine supplemented by an electric motor.

At the heart of the powertrain is BMW's latest twin-turbocharged, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, common-rail diesel engine--used in the European-market 123d. With an aluminum block to keep weight over the front axle low and a third-generation injection system operating at 29,000 psi of pressure, it kicks out an impressive 204 hp--a bit more than 100 hp per liter--along with 295 lb-ft of torque at 2000 rpm. An electric motor mounted inside the transmission housing develops 15 kilowatts and a maximum 155 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid system uses regenerative braking to feed electricity to a lithium-ion battery pack stored underneath the cargo floor.

The X5 Vision is equipped with all-wheel drive. It uses an eight-speed automatic transmission--with the generator and electric motor management incorporated into the housing--engineered with ZF. The result is the sort of fuel economy and emissions ratings you'd normally associate with the 3 Series rather than the X5.

Along with the new hybrid driveline, BMW has applied a whole range of features to the X5 Vision to optimize efficiency further, including a stop/start function. Another development is the appearance of two distinct electrical systems. In addition to the conventional 12-volt system, the X5 Vision also uses a 120-volt arrangement. BMW says the two systems, which operate in parallel, help provide a more stable network than the traditional 12-volt system alone, allowing high-power systems to draw electricity more rapidly. The X5 Vision also has a large solar panel on its roof. It produces electricity and sends it to the battery, where it is then used to preheat the engine oil, while providing an immediate source of power for the air-conditioning, cool-box, entertainment and other systems when the car is stationary.

While BMW has not made any big changes to the X5's exterior for the concept, it has given it a new set of low-drag wheels. Developed in BMW's wind tunnel, the wheels have specially designed vanes that BMW claims reduce buffeting within the wheel wells. The wheels are fitted with low-rolling-resistance tires from Firestone.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class was launched at the Auto Expo by Dr. Joachim Schmidt (President & CEO Daimler Central/Eastern Europe, Africa & Asia) and Dr. Wilfried Aulbur (Managing Director and CEO, DaimlerChrysler India) in presence of Dr. Martin Zimmermann (Vice President, Strategy, Alliances &Business Development, Daimler) and Prof. Dr. Eberhard Haller (Vice President, Plant Manager, Sindelfingen).

Speaking on the occasion Dr. Schmidt commented: “25 years ago, Mercedes-Benz introduced the Model 190 and laid the foundations for what has become the bestselling model series in the history of the brand: the C-Class. To date around six million C-Class vehicles have been sold all around the globe. In fact, the C-Class is the world wide leader in its segment and has been an immensely popular vehicle since it was first launched. In India as in all parts of the globe, the C-Class has been an immensely popular vehicle. Just like the Mercedes-Benz 190 introduced 25 years ago, the new C-Class has set new trends in design and technology or driving pleasure. Ladies and gentlemen, here’s Agility at your Command: the new C-Class.”

During his speech, Dr. Aulbur underscored the presence of the Mercedes-brand in India for over 50 years. As pioneers of the luxury car segment in India, Mercedes-Benz has the widest product range and the most extensive sales and support network spread across 28 Indian cities. The company is also the first automobile manufacturer in India to have completed ISO 9001: 2000 certification. “The result of close and continuous engagement with customers is reflected through our growing sales figures as well. This year, we achieved record sales of 2491 units from Jan-Dec 2007. This marks a growth of 18% over 2007.”

The event also witnessed the India-debut of the Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class. This breathtaking vehicle is a sheer experience in luxury and is a Coupe offering from the Mercedes-Benz stable. From its spectacular sporty look, this super luxury car is truly a dream machine. The CLK 350 version features powerful 6 cylinder V-6 engine; the torque is 350 Nm at 2400 - 5000 rpm, and delivers an output of 272 hp at 6000 rpm. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km in only 6.4 secs!With a length of 4596 millimetres, the new C-Class is 68 millimetres longer than its predecessor. The body width has increased by 42 mm to 1770 millimetres, and the wheelbase by 45 mm to 2760 millimetres. These dimensions create the conditions for a generously sized interior, and therefore more comfort. The front shoulder room has increased by 40 millimetres, for example. The design of the new C-Class is based on the modern Mercedes idiom, which reflects the technical superiority of automobiles bearing the star with taut lines and large, tranquil surfaces. The pronounced wedge-shape of the front end serves to emphasise attributes such as agility and performance.

Green Vehicles on display
Utilizing domestic and international strategic partnerships, Mahindra’s 1200 strong R&D team works to bring the most advanced and futuristic technologies to India. Covering a wide range of advanced powertrain solutions, Mahindra is displaying different platforms of drivable full hybrid vehicles, micro (start/stop) hybrid vehicles, bio-fuel vehicles, an electric passenger vehicle, a hydrogen combustion engine vehicle and many recyclable materials and reusable technologies.

B100 and B20 biodiesel vehicles on Scorpio and Bolero platforms were displayed at the Auto Show to illustrate Mahindra’s bio-diesel program. Bio-diesel is derived from renewable plant sources, which can greatly improve energy security and conventional fuel depletion concerns. The organization has an ambitious biofuel programme that has been kick-started by production ready B5 and B10 vehicles.

M&M’s hybrid vehicles combine the best features of internal combustion engine and electric vehicle technologies to bring forth vehicles with incredible fuel economies with no sacrifice in performance. Advanced vehicle controller technology in both the parallel and micro hybrid options are set to give the Indian driver the best drive using minimal fuel, which results in less cost to the consumer. A fleet of full, parallel hybrid vehicles are being tested and the micro hybrid will be launched before monsoon of 2008.

Mahindra’s Sustainable Mobility Solutions Programme
As a part of the Sustainable Mobility Solutions Programme, M&M has been successful in developing the hydrogen-powered Alfa 3-wheeler vehicle. First of its kind in the world, the Hy-Alfa runs on nothing but compressed hydrogen gas.
